Is it necessary to remove a sound card when repairing a PC?

I had someone come and repair my computer. After he left and upon inspection I noticed that there was no sound coming out of my pc. I immediately umed it was my monitor, turned out after i placed a call to the repairman that he forgot to install the sound card. So my question is is it necessary to remove a sound card to repair a pc? I'm not very computer literate..just seems odd to me. Of course I could be wrong. Needless to say I had some issues with him (the repairman) in the first place so I will not be calling him back. So I have decided buy and install the sound card myself.
