In North Carolina, can a pedestrian who is NOT operating a motor vehicle refuse a breathalyzer test?

Cops around my NC college campus sometimes have an unfortunate knack for stopping pedestrians on weekend nights and breathalyzing them. As a 20 year old, would I be within my rights to refuse a sobriety test and/or breathalyzer if I was stopped by a police-officer while I was walking? I have researched the topic but cannot seem to find a definite answer.
